Friends of Darebin Creek Events 2017

Further details for many events are still to come, but you can book these dates in your 2017 diary.

Sunday 12 February – Nestbox Construction Workshop 10am

10am at Darebin Parklands Environment Centre, end of Separation St Fairfield, Melways 31 C9. To be later installed around Banyule Northern Grassland Reserve. Thanks to City of Banyule.

Wednesday 15 February – AGM with guest presenter 7pm

7pm at Darebin Parklands Environment Centre, which can be found on the right at the end of Separation St Alphington. Melways 31 C9. Our guest speaker is Benedict Hughes the Practical Beekeeper.

Sunday 5 March – Clean Up Australia Day 10am

Help Friends clean up the Southern Road Wetlands with assistance from City of Banyule Bush Crew. Meet 250 metres north of the Gona St / Liberty Parade entrance to the Darebin Creek Trail from 10am. Melways 31 D1.

Sunday 26 March – BYO Picnic and Spotlight Walk 7pm

BYO picnic followed by a spotlight walk around the Darebin Parklands. The Darebin Parklands Environment Centre is the two green buildings on the right at the end of Separation St Alphington. Melways 31 C9.

Wednesday 19 April – Committee Meeting 7pm

Discuss issues affecting the creek and plan upcoming events. The Darebin Parklands Environment Centre is the green buildings on the right at the end of Separation St Alphington. Melways 31 C9.

Sunday 30 April – Woody weed control at Cherry St Macleod 10am

Friends will continue working with the Darebin Bush Crew in the Wildflower Grassy Woodland. 10am at Cherry Street Reserve, Macleod. Melways 20 A7. There is dense sapling regrowth to thin out, followed by a look at surrounding indigenous plant species.

Sunday 21 May – Community Planting at Epping North Conservation Reserve 10am

Help re-introduce the rare Matted flax-lily and a selection of other native wildflowers, into Whittlesea’s reserves by volunteering on Endangered Species Day. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring a hat and rain coat if required. Tools and gloves supplied. Morning tea will be provided. 10am—1pm. Epping North Conservation Reserve. Access via Countryfields Boulevard (Melways Map 182 A6)

Sunday 28 May – Thornbury bush plots planting 10am

Join City of Darebin Bushcrew infill planting in bush plots between Clarendon St and Gooch St Thornbury. Meet at the end of Clarendon Street, Thornbury. Melways 31 B6. Please wear a hat, long pants and sturdy shoes. Gloves and other equipment supplied, along with tea and nibbles.

Sunday June 4 – Community Planting Elation Conservation Reserve 10am – 1pm.

Celebrate World Environment Day by joining in the restoration of the Red Gum Grassland in Elation Conservation Reserve, Doreen. The reserve is situated between Plenty Gorge Parklands and new housing developments and provides important refuge for native animals in the area. Help establish native shrubs, wildflowers and grasses in the reserve which will complement the 200-year-old Red Gums and encourage native birds, reptiles and small mammals. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring a hat and rain coat if required. Tools and gloves supplied. Morning tea will be provided.

Sunday June 18 – Green St Ivanhoe planting / weeding 10am

Join Friends for planting and weeding along the creek behind Green Street, Ivanhoe. Michelle (a Friends member), her neighbours and Friends have been working on this strip for a few years now. Meet at 141 Green Street, Ivanhoe. Melways 31 C6. If you turn up late, just walk down the driveway of 141 Green Street to get to the creek. Light refreshments afterwards.

Sunday 25 June – Southern Road Wetland planting 10am

Join Banyule Bushcrew in planting out the wetland south of Southern Road in Heidelberg West. This will be continuing previous work to completely rehabilitate the wetland area. Please bring your sturdy boots and gloves, hats and weather-wise clothing. To be followed by tea and nibbles. Meet 250m north of the Gona St/Liberty Parade entrance to the Darebin Creek Trail – turn right at first path intersection and head north – follow the signs.  Melways 31 D1.

Sunday 9 July – Banyule Northern Grassland Reserve Planting 10am

Join the Banyule Bushland Team and Friends to revegetate our Plains Grassy Woodland. We will be planting indigenous grasses back into this threatened vegetation community.
Follow the signs from the corner of Dougharty Road and Liberty Parade, West Heidelberg. Morning tea provided.

Sunday 30 July – National Tree Day planting in Reservoir 10am

Help Darebin Bushcrew plant trees and shrubs along the creek at the end of Purinuan Road, Reservoir. We will be infill planting an area along the creek in Reservoir that we have worked on over the last few National Tree Days. Entrance to the site is via Purinuan Road, Reservoir. Melways 19 D4. Please wear sturdy shoes, hat and clothing to suit weather conditions. All tools provided. As usual, there will be a cup of tea and nibbles available afterwards.

Sunday 30 July – National Tree Day planting in Mernda 10am

Join City of Whittlesea on National Tree Day for a community planting in Mernda. Meet at 105 Hunters Road, Mernda. More details to come.

Sunday 13 August Olympic Park Precinct planting 10am

Community planting on the south side of Bell Street, in conjunction with the Wimpole Action Group.

Sunday 27 August – Planting Banyule Northern Grassland Reserve 10am

Community Planting at Banyule Northern Grassland Reserve. In conjunction with other groups. Follow the signs from the corner of Dougharty Road and Liberty Parade, West Heidelberg. More details to come.

Sunday in September – date tbc Banyule Planting Day.

Community planting at Helipad entrance beds. More details to come.

Sunday 17 September – Napier Waller Reserve planting 10am – midday

Time to plant out the Napier Waller Reserve with help from Darebin Creek Management Committee. Meet at the new bridge at Sparks Reserve, near corner of Heidelberg Rd and The Boulevard, Ivanhoe. Melways 31 D10. Please wear long pants and sturdy shoes. Gloves and other equipment supplied. As usual, tea and nibbles will be available at the end. See website for further details.

Sunday 24 September – Weeding Thornbury Trail Entrances 10am

Join City of Darebin Bushcrew for maintenance of bush plots between Clarendon St and Gooch St, Thornbury. Meet at the end of Clarendon Street, Thornbury. Melways 31 B6. Please wear a hat, long pants and sturdy shoes. Gloves and other equipment supplied, along with tea and nibbles.

Sunday 15 October – Community Bird Survey, South Morang

Come along for an early morning bird survey of Granite Hills, South Morang to celebrate National Bird Week. Details to come.

Learn how to survey birdlife in bushland, grassland, and wetlands along the Darebin Creek. Meet at bushland near cnr Dougharty Road and Liberty Parade, West Heidelberg. Melways 19 E10. Bookings preferred, contact DCMC on 9499 4454 or email info@dcmc.org.au
